Syngonium
Scientific name: Syngonium podophyllum Schott
Common Names: American Evergreen, Arrowhead vine, Goosefoot
Plant Type: Herbaceous Perennial
Genus: Syngonium spp.
Family: Araceae (Aroids)
Syngonium spp. is a tropical perennial evergreen shrub or vine. The aerial roots often grow at the nodes. The plants can not only climb up with other plants, but also creep over the ground. have various leaf shapes and diverse colors, the leaves are arrowhead shaped or halberd shaped; The spathe shows in light green or yellow color. Syngonium originates from tropical & subtropical rainforests of Central and South America. They prefer warm, humid and half shady environments. Syngonium is not easy to blossom. As a pouplar foliage plant, is widely cultivated around the world.
Syngonium spp. is known for its stunning arrow-like foliage. Syngonium plant is eye-catcher for its climbing shoots, just like the Epipremnum aureum, Syngonium also has the feature of dimorphic leaves. when it grows on the ground, the leaves will show in shield shaped or arrow shaped, while climbing upward, the leaves will split into 3 splits, 5 splits... 2N+1 splits. So the plant enthusiasts can also use the moss pole or palm pole to let Syngonium climb up to grow into different leaf types, which will have a great sense of achievement. The foliage of arrowhead vine is green, reddish, white, or multicolored, depending on different varieties. You will find that shoots in adult plants form differently shaped leaves: they can be oval or elliptical, arrow-shaped or even split or deeply indented leaves. Syngonium podophyllum is the most common houseplant variety and is also known as the arrowhead plant.
The syngonium flower is rather unspectacular and, as with all arum plants, cob shaped. As a houseplant, Syngonium does not usually flower. As is typical to the arum family, the syngonium is also poisonous.
Air Purifying: Maintain the balance of carbon dioxide and oxygen, reduce the effect of benzene or formaldehyde gases. Improve the microclimate, reduce noise, conserve water and regulate humidity; In addition, it also has the functions of absorbing dust, purifying air and so on.
Light: Syngonium is low-light tolerant houseplants. It has a strong adaptability to light, and prefers scattered light. Avoid direct sunlight which can cause sunburns on leaves. The plant grows towards the light, so it will be helpful to rotate it 90 degrees once a week to make sure each direction get the same amount of sunlight. Regularly rotation also encourages Syngonium grow up straightly and become a full-bodied plant. In summer, Arrowhead vines can benefit from early morning direct sunlight, while the afternoon intense sun will cause leaf damage. In winter, no shading is required to get enough sunlight for plant. However, if your space is lack of light for a long time, the leaves will grow crazily and the leaves patterns will fade quickly. It is necessary to grow the plant under artificial light sources (LED grow lights work greatly as they are energy efficient and no much heat) if your space is light-challenged.
Water: Arrowhead vine has a high moisture requirement. In summer, the plant should be watered sufficiently and keep its soil moist, which is helpful for the growth of stems. In winter, the watering frequency should be reduced and its potting soil should not be too wet, otherwise it is easy to cause root rot and withered leaves under low temperature environment. It is allowed Syngoniums dry out partially between watering. If kept the indoor plants dry for too long time, the lower leaves will dry up and turn brown. If this happened, try to soak the soil and let the plant rehydrate. However, if kept the soil wet for long periods, their leaves will also turn yellow or brown. During normal maintenance period, try to measure the weight of the pot soil. If the pot soil becomes too light, it’s the right time to water the plant thoroughly.
Under good ventilation conditions, mist around the plant to increase the air humidity. Average humidity 40-50% is adequate for these indoor plants, but it will be best if you can find way to increase the humidity over 60%.
Temperature: Syngonium spp. prefer warmer environment due to their tropical & subtropical plant nature. The ideal growth temperature for Arrowhead vines are 70-85°F (22-30°C). If the maintenance temperature is lower than 50°F (10°C), Syngoniums will stop growing. If the temperature is lower than 40°F (5°C), it will cause the plant frozen injury and even kill it. Therefore, make sure to move Syngoniums indoors in winter if the temperature drops below to 40°F (5°C). Keep the plant away from drafty window and doorways during the winter months.
Soil: Syngoniums likes a slightly acidic soil with high temperature and humidity, loose and fertile, and good drainage. The suitable PH value for plant growth is PH 5.5.to 6.5. Potting soil should be rich in nutrients and organic matter, coconut peat or peat-based soil mixes should be ideal, like shredded leaf mould, peat moss and coarse sand. The soil with good drainage is the perfect growing medium for all Syngoniums.
